How to avoid basement floods

A sump pump is one of the most important tools for protecting your home from water damage. Especially in places like Regina, where heavy rain, snowmelt, and clay soil can cause basement flooding.

If you’ve ever noticed dampness, musty smells, or pooling water in your basement.

It might be time to think about installing a sump pump. This small but powerful device can protect your home from serious water damage.

Homes with basements or crawl spaces are all susceptible to water.

When it rains or snow melts, water naturally seeps down into the soil. If the soil around your foundation becomes over saturated. Water pressure builds up along the walls and floor of your basement.

To relieve this pressure, the water follows the path of least resistance . Often through tiny cracks, joints, or gaps in your foundation walls.
What is a sump pump?

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a small, electrically powered device. Designed to remove excess water that collects in a sump pit.

A sump pit is basin usually located in the lowest part of a basement or crawl space.

How does a Sump Pump work?

Water from around your homes’ foundation or under your basement floor. Drains into the sump pit (often through weeping tile or perimeter drains).

When the water level in the pit rises to a specific level, a float switch activates the pump. The pump pushes the water  out through a discharge pipe. Sending it away from your house.

Once the water level lowers to a safe level, the float switch lowers, and the pump shuts off.

SUMP PUMP FAQs

Does my house need a sump pump?

Yes, you should consider a sump pump if:
  • Your basement has had water before — even a small amount.
  • Your home is built on flat or low-lying ground.
  • You live in an area with a high water table or poor drainage.
  • You notice humidity, damp spots, or a musty odor in your basement.
These are all signs that water may be seeping around your foundation and could eventually cause flooding, cracks, or mold growth.

How to test a sump pump?

Testing your sump pump regularly is one of the best ways to ensure it’s ready when you need it. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

Step-by-Step: How to Test a Sump Pump
  • Inspect the Pit
    • Remove the sump pit cover (if it has one).
    • Make sure the pit is clean and free of debris, gravel, or sludge that could jam the float or impeller.
  • Check the Power
    • Confirm the pump is plugged into a GFCI outlet and has power.
    • If you have a battery backup system, make sure it’s charged and functional.
  • Fill the Pit With Water
    • Slowly pour at least 5 gallons of water into the sump pit.
    • Watch the float switch—it should rise as the water level rises.
    • When it reaches the activation point, the pump should turn on automatically.
  • Observe the Pump
    • The pump should start discharging water quickly and smoothly through the outlet pipe.
    • Watch that the water level drops in the pit and the pump shuts off once the float lowers.
    • If the pump doesn’t turn on, runs roughly, or doesn’t shut off, that’s a sign it may need servicing or replacement.
  • Check the Discharge Line
    • Go outside and confirm that water is exiting the discharge pipe and flowing away from the foundation.
    • Ensure the line isn’t clogged, frozen, or discharging too close to the house.
  • Test the Backup Pump (Optional)
    • If you have a battery backup:
    • Unplug the main pump.
    • Repeat the water test to see if the backup system activates properly.

Why is my sump pump constantly running?

If your sump pump runs constantly, even when there’s no rain or water entering the pit, that’s a clear sign something’s wrong. Continuous running can quickly burn out the motor or wear down components, so it’s important to find the cause.

If the sump pit is full of water and the pump is constantly running it could be due to several other factors;

  •  clogged discharge line,
  • a stuck float switch,
  • or the pump is too small to handle the volume of water entering the sump pit

It may also indicate a high water table or inadequate drainage. Causing constant water infiltration.

What's the difference between a pedestal and submersible sump pump?

The most obvious difference is a submersible sump pump is installed below the surface of the water. A pedestal sump pump, the motor sits above the water and the pump sits on the bottom of the sump pit.

Submersible sump pumps are typically more powerful and quieter. But they are also more expensive.

If you basement is finished, a submersible pump is preferred.

How many years does a sump pump last?

A sump pump with last between 7 to 10 years. It will depend on how often it runs and if regular maintenance is kept up to help extend the life of the sump pump.

When a sump pump is showing signs of failure and reduced efficiency. It is time to consider replacing the sump pump.

How often should a sump pump be serviced?

A sump pump should be serviced at least once a year. That time should be in early spring before the snow melts and spring rain. However, another service could be done in late fall before freezing temperatures.

What are the warning signs of a failing sump pump?

  • The pump doesn’t start automatically.
  • It runs but doesn’t pump water out.
  • It makes grinding, rattling, or humming noises.
  • It cycles on and off rapidly.
If you notice any of these, book time with us to come inspect or replace the pump before its too late.

Should my sump pump have a battery back up?

Yes, it is recommended. Especially if storms tend to cause power outages at your home. If a sump pump loses power, it will not be able to remove water from the sump pit.

Installing a battery backup will prevent this issue.

What size sump pump do I need?

We typically install a 1/3 horsepower sump pump. However, if your homes is in an area with a high water table or has frequent flooding, a 1/2 horsepower sump pump should be installed.
